Why..... WHY would anyone do this voluntarily

943

u/CthulhusCumSlut 4d ago

Adrenaline is a hell of a drug.

410

u/sociofobs 4d ago

That, and youth makes you think you're invincible. Ex-BMX freestyler here, ask me how I know.

118

u/sociofobs 4d ago

u/Sick_Fantasy u/malinex Because it took 3 bone fractures, countless other injuries and close to 10 years, before I came to my senses. It was fun while it lasted, but definitely not worth becoming disabled or lifeless over.

49

u/Sick_Fantasy 4d ago

That was what I expected. My acquaintance broke spine on BMX. Gladly he stay awake after accident screams that he can't feel legs so when paramedics came they knew how to handle him and he is walking but yeah, it was not easiest skill to regain.

19

u/sociofobs 4d ago

Thankfully, I only broke my collar bone and arm (2x), but yes - you're always one unlucky moment away from altering your life for the worse. Life's risky as it is, no need to multiply that risk unnecessarily.

15

u/smartwatersucks 4d ago

Dang you should've tried being good at it.

6

u/dc36s 4d ago

lol. BURN!

2

u/Ithurts_but_Ilikeit 4d ago

I did not expect such violence.

2

u/essdii- 4d ago

Yah same. I miss it. Miss the dirt jumps, and street contests, and essentially being able to crash on anyone’s couch from any state who rode. Miss the Brooklyn bridge banks, miss handrails, miss all the Vegas skateparks ):. My last man injury was from a double kink handrail when I was in Vegas for interbike. Was a bitch to heal and never healed right. Evolved into downhill mountain biking. And that is some fun stuff. Been several years though, now that I’m working so much and have a bunch of kids ! Time to pass the baton on to my rug rats

I wiped out while hill bombing on a longboard when I was in college. Shockingly, I wore a helmet, knee and elbow pads, and carving gloves. I say shockingly, because when I took my normal hills to get to a different building (which were pretty fast rides) I wouldn’t wear anything. Hit a patch of gravel. My board stopped, but I didn’t. I was in the air for a solid 3 seconds (felt like eternity) and landed on my jaw. Broke my arm clean trying to break my fall and had to get my jaw wired. A few years of recovery and went back to boarding but psychologically couldn’t bring myself to take go down ANYTHING that declined. Even just a little. I’d start shaking and couldn’t balance.

I still ride but nothing even remotely close to how I used to.

6

u/adj_noun_digit 4d ago

I've broken both collarbones, several ribs, an arm, and countless other injuries while snowboarding over the past 30 years.

It was absolutely worth it and would do it again in a heartbeat.

19

u/sociofobs 4d ago

I enjoyed extreme sports in my teens and still thought it was all worth it in most of my 20s. Now in mid-30s, I no longer think so. There are far more important, precious and valuable things in life, that I could've lost thanks to being so careless in the past. No amount of temporary enjoyment is worth that.

10

u/Harry_Gorilla 4d ago

Mid 40s here. I snow skied & wake-boarded for most of my 20s without breaking anything and enjoyed the hell out of it. It can still be fun without pushing so hard that you break yourself

There's a study done on extreme skateboard, BMX, free divers and found they're brain patterns are that are the same as sociopathic and even psychotic patterns, but what happens when they are well structured.

Kinda cool. I thought.

Meaning you look at things differently and see things differently. You're one really bad parent away from being another Manson.

13

u/Calm_Leopard798 4d ago

Sounds like a pseudoscience considering sociopath isn't a real medical term.

2

u/Remarkable-Opening69 4d ago

Looks more like, normal?

4

u/WeirdTraumaMasochist 4d ago edited 4d ago

If there is any basis to it, as somone with weird brain and weird feelings; It would be because we are attracted to the stuff. Feels good to feel stuff. And some people just don’t feel as much stuff as others

I prefer eating sleeping sex and drugs personally but ig you could also risk getting suffocated by ice. The sociopath stuff is fake btw. Thats what happens when you purposely study a specific type of criminal, then make their character traits the bad scary ones

Edit: a consistent bad negative feeling seems to be a pattern too. To really make you want to explode if you don’t have a vice

I just say I have autism. It’s pretty similar (low key think it would be in the same section if people didn’t think it was high IQ evil disease. Or if you are too weird: low IQ evil disease. The separation between the two being delusion)

Autism! But with a social twist! And sometimes you want to stab people, fuck a homeless man, or eat a whole scorpion pepper due to constant fear or anger.

u/StockEntertainer2072 4d ago

their* brain patterns

7

u/sociofobs 4d ago

Something tells me that's a pile of bullshit, though I'd like to read that study. My simplest explanation would be, that young people just get hooked on adrenaline. Once you experience that high, you want to experience it again and again, till you get over it. Most people, once they get older and have more responsibilities in their lives, leave those extreme hobbies behind. Some go professional, just look at how successful RedBull is in extreme sports.

2

u/No_Exam4769 4d ago

Also when you are older getting injured is both a) more likely and b) more of a problem (ie you have to work) and c) (bonus) it takes longer to heal- or doesn't heal properly so it's always a "thing" now. (see Louis CK).

2

u/Eat-Ca-Ca 4d ago

I'll look, but it was real. And it wasn't a bad thing. It was really more of how people learn good behavior and morals, and can wire their brain patterns, same for people with TBI get over their vertigo by Physical Therapy

Imagine doing that before eventually crashing into a pile of dead or dying skiers at the bottom.

2

u/Truxxis 4d ago

This reminds me of a couple of cave diving tragedy videos I've watched 😬

9

u/FrankTooby 4d ago

Makes me think of a video I saw the other day, never ski committed when following someone else's tracks, they were skiing off cliffs and parachuting down.

Maybe he sent a drone first?

20

u/Daripuff 4d ago

I bet they went up from the exit first, and found this entrance from the inside before going down.

22

u/Adkit 4d ago

Why would you go in from the exit? Even if you know there's a way through, one small stumble, a single bumped head, and you're dead. Nobody going to find you in there. This is just dumb even if you know what you're doing.

12

u/Daripuff 4d ago

Because as you can see, the exit is a fairly level tunnel, and a fairly normal looking snow cave that is fairly easy to explore on foot.

I'm saying that I could tell that a person could walk on foot from the exit of the tunnel all the way to the bottom of this first terrifying crevasse, and look up and see the light at the top of the crevasse, and call upward to the people at the top to say "Oy! I'm here at the bottom! It goes all the way through!"

9

u/toru_okada_4ever 4d ago

If this is on any kind of glacier, or indeed in any circumstance, the ice and snow may shift quickly, and then you are buried.

7

u/Daripuff 4d ago

I never said it wasn't stupid to do.

If it's in Europe (I have no experience skiing in America) these kinda caves that you can ski through are famous if they are near any ski resort, you'll find plenty of people going there, guides etc.

It looks crazy as fuck, but if you know how to ski it's not that hard or dangerous, especially since you can be rescued without too much struggle.

Please guys, don't to something stupid like this. Many are just a sheer drop - with luck your corpse can be retrieved in the summer, if not, found after years.

If you survive the drop, you are lucky and unlucky at the same time. Chances are slim that people will find you alive.

Please don't ski down random holes and be careful of unknown terrain - stay on the predetermined route. Often the holes are covered by snow.

Be careful, stay save.

246

u/Billbeachwood 4d ago

Please don't ski down random holes

But use protection if you do.

9

u/Agarwel 4d ago

On the other hand... there were already ski footprints in front of him. So this was not random unexplored hole. So we knew what is he getting into. Of course the question is, how it was inspected the first time.

29

u/wisdomoarigato 4d ago

19

u/El-Grande- 4d ago

I mean there are ski tracks here. It’s not like he went in blind. Also the camera is making it looks much different than the reality

That’s not cave diving. Just caving. Cave diving is a lot worse…
